Fido to offer unlimited WiFi cellphone calls

Fido is launching a new service Wednesday that will let its customers chat as long as they like without using up their mobile phone minutes while they are within a WiFi network.

The service, which requires a specially enabled handset and comes with an added $15 charge to mobile phone service for unlimited local calling and $20 for unlimited local and long distance calling across Canada, will let cellphone users log onto Wi-Fi networks, whether it’s at home, the office, an airport or the local coffee shop.

Rogers is also doing the same thing. Both are using UMA technology (ie. doesn’t work on the iPhone).
